Many of us set resolutions for ourselves on the 1st January, looking to achieve new and exciting things in the year ahead. Unfortunately, many of these New Year’s Resolutions can fail before January is even over – the 17th of January is officially Ditch Your New Year’s Resolutions Day – and that’s usually because the resolutions are too vague or too unrealistic.
Instead of falling into the trap of creating New Year’s Resolutions that you can’t possibly stick to, we’ve come up with a couple of easily achievable ideas that can not only help you improve yourself, but also your home, over the coming year.
This year I will… declutter my home
The Christmas period can makes us realise how cluttered our homes actually are. Making room for another guest around the dining table, or getting the spare room ready for your in-laws, can highlight just how many things you have in your home that you don’t have space for.
If this sounds familiar, why not take on the challenge of decluttering your home? Marie Kondo, a renowned Japanese organising consultant and author, has recently launched a series on Netflix showcasing her approach to tidying up. However, you don’t have to take on the task all at once like she does – why not instead assign a room or space to each month of the year? Maybe in January you’ll tackle the kitchen, maybe the office in February, and then the lounge in March, and so on.
You’ll be surprised at what decluttering can do for you too. Creating space in your home will make rooms feel airier and more welcoming, so you feel even more at home in your home.
This year I will… get that home renovation project done
We all have those big projects just sitting around, waiting for someone to start them. Whether that’s the loft conversion you’ve been thinking about, or simply redecorating a room or rooms in your house, it can be hard to motivate yourself to start the work.
If you break it down into easy tasks, you can remove some of the pressure that you may feel to get it done all in one go. The best thing about a New Year’s Resolution is that it can be spread out over 12 months, meaning that you can pace yourself throughout the project and only get as much done as you can feasibly do, instead of feeling that you’re working against a deadline.
Whether the project is big or small, recognising it at the beginning of the year means that you’ll be able to plan it in and get it done.
This year I will… get my house ready to sell and move out
If you’re thinking of moving this year, setting a New Year’s Resolution to inspire you to get your house ready to sell could be a great way to approach it. If you know when you’re planning on moving out and when you need to sell your house by, you can set a to-do list as your resolutions to get everything done.
Whether that’s packing up all your personal belongings, getting your house ready and tidy for viewings, or even making those first few steps – such as contacting an estate agent or getting a valuation – you can set them as resolutions and get that sense of achievement when they’re done.
