Living in Croydon

The historic town of Croydon is situated to the south of London and is today one of the largest commercial districts outside central London. Croydon is of course a very popular location for those who commute into central London and has a huge amount to offer in the way of history, entertainment and the arts, with institutions such as the major arts and entertainment centre, Fairfield Halls, adding to the vibrancy of the borough. Croydon is growing fast with an estimated population approaching 400,000. The area is currently going through a large regeneration project to include the Westfield shopping centre, due for completion by 2018.

Local History

Croydon was home to the famous Croydon Airport the, UK’s first major international airport and traces its history back to World War One and it was from this airport that Amy Johnson departed on the 5th May 1930 and arrived in Darwin, Australia on the 24th May and set a world record as the fastest woman to Australia. The Surrey Iron Railway from Croydon to Wandsworth opened in 1803 and was the world’s first public railway and today Croydon’s Tramlink is an 18 mile light rail network with trains every 1-6 minutes through Croydon town centre. Surrey Street Market has a Royal Charter dating back to 1276 linking it to the Archbishop of Canterbury, the market is regularly used as a location for TV, film and advertising.

Croydon offers a huge variety of properties including central Croydon flats and luxury apartments, terraced, semi-detached and detached homes, both character and modern properties. Croydon is home to the Whitgift Estate where you will find large detached houses in Grimwade avenue, Sandilands, Mapledale avenue, Radcliffe road, Harland avenue, Upfield, Fitzjames avenue and Sandilands with the Tram stop conveniently situated at the end of the road, serving East Croydon station and the town centre.


Schools and other amenities

Croydon and the surrounding area is well known for many excellent state and private schools including Parkhill Infant and Junior School, St Peter’s Primary School, Archbishop Tenison’s C of E High School, Coloma Convent Girls School to name but a few. In the private sector there is Elmhurst School for Boys, Royal Russell Independent co-educational school for pupils aged 3 to 18 years, Old Palace of John Whitgift School, an Independent day school for girls aged 4 to 18 years, Trinity School, an independent school for boys aged from 10 years and welcomes girls in the 6th form and Whitgift School, an independent day and boarding school for boys aged 10 to 18 years.

Croydon town centre offers a huge selection of shops and restaurants and coming very soon to Croydon is a brand new Westfield Shopping Centre. The nearby Purley Way offers a large selection of retail shops including John Lewis home store, Ikea home store, TK Max and Next furniture store to name just a few. This is also where you will find the 8 screen View Cinema. South Croydon is famous for the quantity and variety of restaurants it offers and the Popular Surrey Street Market situated in the heart of the old town is a market open 6 days a week with a variety of stalls selling a range of produce and products.

If its arts and culture that interests you look no further than the Fairfield Halls within which the Ashcroft Theatre, Concert Hall, Arnhem Gallery and the New Studio offers a fabulous selection of Plays, Ballet, concerts, music, Art and much more. Right in the centre of Croydon is Queen’s Gardens opened in 1983 by Queen Elizabeth II. Lloyd Park covers 114 acres and offers park land with mature trees and woodland, a café, toilets, children’s playground, football, cross country running, a bowling green and there is a small pond. Lloyd Park has a car park with free parking for 3 hours (but a ticket must be obtained from the ticket machine). The tram service for the park stops at Lloyd Park, route 3.

For Golfers there are a number of golf clubs in the area including Croham Hurst Golf Club, Shirley Park Golf Course, Selsdon Park Hotel and Golf Course, Addington Palace and the Addington Golf Club, ranked in Golf world’s top 100 courses in Great Britain and Ireland.

Transport Links

Croydon is well placed for accessing Gatwick and Heathrow Airports and the South Coast. East Croydon main line station provides excellent services to London main line stations in 18 and 21 minutes and Gatwick Airport between 15 and 32 minutes. There is also a main line station at South Croydon.
